A Brief History World War II

Germany began to sending troops into Austria in 1938 as part of the growth of the territory Germany wanted to control. Brittan and France went into talks with Germany to encourage Germany to consider peaceful resolutions. At the same time Germany In 1939, Germany and Russia attacked Poland in what became the first act of World War II.

France and Britan declaired war on Germany. Germany attacked Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, and northern France in early 1940. By June, Germany had entered Paris and gained control of France. By the end of 1940 Germany was attacking Britain by air and had sent troops to assist Italy in securing key ports in Greece and North Africa.

While America had not been actively participating in the war and declaired itself as neutral, it did take preperation to defend itself and provided supplies to Britain. In December of 1941, Japan attacked the American navel base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Hitler declared war on the United States a few days later. It was during this time that Japan was making headway in the Pacific.

During 1942 America began moving troops to the British Isles in preperation for their part in the war. Before the end of 1942 the Allies were in North Africa helping the French push the Italian armies back into Europe. For the first part of 1943 the war was centralized in Italy while British and American forces focused on defending the english channel. Up until June 1944 the war focused in Italy with the Allied forces slowly pushing Germany slowly back.

By 1944 Germany had turned against their key ally and attacked the Soviet Union. The Soviets used the cold winter to defend against the Germans and by spring were in a position to start pushing the German army back toward Germany,

On June 6th, 1944 the Allies started a massive invasion on German occupied France. This day is known as D-Day. During the summer of 1944, Allied troops slowly moved into France and by September they were beginning to make headway into Germany. Toward the end of 1944 Allied forces were struggling against the German army in the Ardennes, a heavily forrested and rough terrain region that border France and Germany. This was called The Battle of the Bulge.

In early 1945 the Allied forces began to move into Germany. Adolf Hitler committed suicide as troops closed in. and by May Germany had surrendered.

With Germany defeated the Allies now turned their attention toward Japan and the battle that was taking place in the Pacific. In early 1945 American forces were beginning to defeat Japan in the Pacific. In August of 1945 Japan surrendered defeat after suffering two atomic bombs and the Soviet Union declaring war on Japan.
